The Harbour City — Vancouver Island's second city, famous for its bar (the chocolate dessert) and ferry access
What to know before you book
Nanaimo is Vancouver Island's second-largest city — a harbour city that serves as the main gateway to mid-Vancouver Island from the mainland (BC Ferries from Tsawwassen/Horseshoe Bay). The city is the birthplace of the Nanaimo Bar (the famous three-layer chocolate dessert) and boasts excellent scuba diving in the harbour among sunken wrecks.
Nanaimo is positioned midway up Vancouver Island, making it an excellent base for exploring both the Cowichan Valley wine country to the south (45 min) and Tofino's wild Pacific surf beaches to the north (3 hours). The Old City Quarter has good independent restaurants.
